PASSIONFRUIT - World Jazz Fusion
Guitar virtuoso, Guy Strazz, renowned for crossing musical boundaries in jazz,
returns to the Greenway Chapel after the inspired performance last year.
He will be joined by long time collaborators, pianist Matt McMahon and
bassist Hugh Fraser to perform jazz tinged with Afro-Brazilian grooves.
Guy Strazz - electro-acoustic guitar
His unique contemporary blend of Afro-Brazilian, acoustic Jazz and Indian classical has seen him perform at India's Jazz Yatra, Jakarta Jazz, Perth and Adelaide Arts Festivals, Clusone Jazz Festival (Italy), Japan World Expo, Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Jazz and Adelaide International Guitar Festival.
He has collaborated with a variety of improvisers including Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Pt.Ashok Roy , Martin Taylor, Slava Grigoryan, Sandy Evans, Don Burrows, Dale Barlow, Mike Stern and Matt McMahon. In 2001-03 Guy was awarded the Music Fellowship by the Australia Council for the Arts, he also received two APRA Nominations and an APRA Award for his World Jazz composition “Mandela”. He is currently the recipient of a Postgraduate scholarship at Macquarie University where he is preparing his PhD thesis on Intercultural Improvisation and he directs Jazz Studies at the Central Coast Conservatorium.
Matt McMahon - piano
Recognized as a new voice in Oz jazz, Sydney’s Matt McMahon was classically trained before he pursued an interest in jazz in his late teens. Since completing a Bachelor of Arts degree at Sydney University and a Diploma in Jazz Studies from the Sydney Conservatorium. Matt has played professionally in a wide variety of contexts with artists including: Dale Barlow, Guy Strazz, Steve Hunter, Sandy Evans, Vince Jones (MD) and Katie Noonan. McMahon has won the National Jazz Piano Awards in 1999 and the Freedman Fellowship for Jazz in 2005; he is also considered a fine composer and leads his acclaimed trio and quartet, releasing CDs for Kimnara Records.
Hugh Fraser - double bass
Hugh studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he gained Jazz and Classical music degrees. He has performed with Australian artists such as Don Burrows, James Morrison, Mike Nock, Kevin Hunt, Ten Part Invention, Dewey Redman, Bobby Shew and Richie Cole. He has toured with major national and international theatre productions such as “We Will Rock You” by Queen, "Cabaret", Recent recordings include Back to Before with Judi Connelli, Frangipani with guitarist Guy Strazz and Jerusalem with pianist Leonie Cohen’s.
