Ian Hemphill has worked in the herb and spice industry for over 45 years. Ian managed a spice company in Singapore in the mid-1980’s, and was a senior manager for a multinational food company in Australia. In 1997 Ian and his wife Elizabeth opened a specialty spice shop in Sydney, and they now conduct all of Herbie’s Spices business operations from Charmhaven on the Central Coast.
Ian is author of several spice books including The Spice & Herb Bible 3rd Edition which in 2015 was a finalist in the ‘Reference and Scholarship’ Category of the James Beard Awards, which many consider to be the ‘the Oscars of the food world’.
During his working life Ian graduated with a Management Certificate and Company Director Diploma. Ian is a past president of The Australian Association of Food Professionals Inc.
Although Ian does not play an instrument, his married life has been filled with music and he considers himself to be an enthusiastic and appreciative listener. Having sponsored various arts through his business, Ian believes that the appreciation of music should be central to our lives, especially within the education environment.
