Guy Strazz (Head of Guitar Program)

Guitar Teacher

Guy teaches jazz, rock, fusion, funk, blues and Latin on electric and acoustic guitars. He is also an accomplished classical guitar player/teacher. He holds a Masters and a PhD in music, as well as B.Mus and a Jazz Diploma. He has studied guitar with luminaries such as Australia’s George Golla, and Americans Mike Stern (ex Miles Davis) and Pat Martino. His classical guitar teachers include John Della Torre and Greg Pickler.

Guy has taught at UWS, UNSW, Macquarie University, the Sydney Conservatorium, The Australian Institute of Music, and Sydney Grammar School. He has taught guitar and ensembles at the Central Coast Conservatorium since 2007. Several of his students have been absorbed into the CCC Scholarship program. In 2017, one of his students won the Pearl Beach Scholarship Eisteddfod and was featured on Scott Levi’s CC ABC Radio.

Several of his students have gone on to establish strong careers in music, including 10 that made it into the Jazz Study Degree Program at Sydney Conservatorium. Some, such as Aaron Flower, have gone on to win the National Jazz Awards, or Wendy Anggerani, who has become a regular performer with the likes of Guy Sebastian, and Ronan Keating.

Guy’s stellar career has seen him perform at national and international festivals, such as Jazz Yatra (India), Melbourne and Wangaratta Jazz Festivals, Jakarta Jazz, Clusone Jazz (Italy), Japan Expo, Johannesburg Film Festival, Sydney Opera House, and the Adelaide International Guitar Festival. He has toured Australia, India, Republic S. Africa, Japan, USA, Indonesia, and Italy.

He has worked with many national and international greats, including Martin Taylor, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Don Burrows, Dale Barlow, George Golla, Sandy Evans, Slava Grigoryan, Mike Stern, and Vince Jones.

Guy is a recipient of a Jazz APRA Award and two APRA nominations for composition; an AIR Nomination 2008 for Best Jazz Release; an Indie Acoustic Project USA Finalist 2006 for Best Global Jazz Beat Release; and a Music Fellowship form the Australia Arts Council. The ABC, Tall Poppies, Underscore, Birdland, and Rufus Records have released his critically acclaimed albums.

Guy is a featured artist in TWANG: A history of the guitar in Australasia (Payne, 2012), and the Australian Encyclopaedia of Jazz (Bruce Johnson).

Tony Magee, APRA reviewer said: "Strazz has the rare musical gift of being able to make his guitars "sing". Moreover, John Shand – the Sydney Morning Herald describes him as: “Amongst the most lyrical players in the land ".


Qualifications:

PhD, MA (Hons), B.Mus, and Dip Jazz degrees from UWS, Sydney Conservatorium and Macquarie University
