John Kellaway (Head of Brass Program)
John was a Secondary School Music Teacher with NSW Dept of Education from 1975 to 1989. He also taught trumpet at Newcastle Conservatorium and was a full time academic lecturer with them for 27 years. From 2013 to 2016 John was the Coordinator/Director of University of Newcastle Conservatorium and Community Programs. He has conducted for Sound Construction Company, Opera Hunter, Orchestra Nova, Newcastle PCYC Brass Band, Maitland City Brass Band, Cardiff North Lakes Brass Band, Mid North Coast Sinfonia, Metropolitan Players, Hunter Orchestra and Newcastle Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra.
John is an experienced adjudicator, having performed work in this capacity for Band Association NSW & Qld, National Band Council of Australia, Eisteddfods in Canberra, Cowra, Coffs Harbour, Tamworth, Armidale and Dubbo. He has also worked as an examiner for the Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) as a senior brass examiner all grades and A.Mus.A., with University of Newcastle (Undergrad and post grad levels) and as an undergraduate examiner with Avondale College.
John is one of Australia's leading brass teachers, and has had a big influence on the communities of Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. He has been involved with many ensembles as both a player and a conductor. He brings a wealth of teaching experience with him to the Central Coast Conservatorium, offering one to one tuition in trumpet, cornet, and flugal horn. John also specializes in all brass band instruments and teaches conducting skills to aspiring conductors of all ages.
