Toby Hall

Toby Hall is one of the most highly regarded Australian drummers, featuring on over 30 Australian CD's. He works with many of Australia's finest jazz and contemporary musicians live and in the studio, including Don Burrows, James Morrison, Sandy Evans, James Greening, Bernie McGann, Dale Barlow, Paul Grabowsky, Mike Nock, Lloyd Swanton, and Vince Jones.  Toby has also performed with international artists include Sheila Jordan, Ricky Ford, Chuck Findley and Raymond MacDonald among others. Toby has given master classes and workshops at tertiary institutions and jazz festivals throughout Australia and has toured all the major capital cities. He has performed at many of the best jazz festivals (Montreal Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Jakarta International Jazz Festival), and contemporary music venues (New York's famous Knitting Factory) throughout Europe, Canada, Asia and the South Pacific.


As an educator, Toby has taught both privately and for many of the leading academic institutions throughout Australia. These include the University of N.S.W, AIM, Sydney Conservatorium Access Centre, the Victorian College of the Arts and SIMA’s Womens Workshops since it’s inception. His broad teaching experience has seen him involved with students across all age groups from primary school children, high school / H.S.C level performers and tertiary level students. Toby currently teaches at the Central Coast Grammar School and in the Central Coast Conservatoriums Band Program.  More broadly, Toby has been actively involved in children's music education for 20 years, primarily through Musica Viva’s In Schools concerts, arguably Australia's leading live music education program for children . Toby has featured on several popular episodes of Play School performing live music with members of the Umbrellas and Justine Clark.

Recently Toby performed in Play School’s Big Jazz Adventure, live at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and for Play Schools 40th Birthday celebration live at the Sydney Opera House. Since moving to the Central Coast Toby has become actively involved in local music scene recording and/or performing with Guy Stazz’s “Eastern Blues” jazz quartet, Brazilian inspired group “Sussurro” and Jazz artists Luke Gallen, Rodric White, Marilane de Mello and Jiri Kripac to name a few.  With recently returned (to the C. Coast) pianist /composer / arranger Gavin A’Hearn and Vocalist / Trumpet sensation Neilsen Gough, Toby has formed a new contemporary trio “OnDaWon” to explore the music where Jazz meets Funk,Electronica, Soul and Australian Pop.

Toby currently juggles his commitments with a number of top Sydney ensembles, including The World According to James, The Alister Spence Trio, The Sandy Evans’ Trio and freelance work with diverse artist such as Paul Capsis, the cATHOLICS,Tina Harrod and Monsieur Camebert.
