Songs of the Solstice Show - Meet the Creative Director04-Jun-2019
Meldi Arkinstall from our Marketing Team catches up with Michaele Archer (pictured), co-head of Vocal Program at Central Conservatorium Music on her upcoming wonderful show "Songs of the Solstice".
Michaele is also Artistic Director of the annual production of "Opera in the Arboretum” bringing together international and nation artists to the Central Coast. She is excited to bring a mix of artists and genre to “Songs of the Solstice’
Here’s a recent Q. & A. with Michaele.
Meldi: How long have you been teaching at Central Coast Con?
Michaele: I’ve been working at the Con since 2005.
Meldi: What do you like about teaching?
Michaele: I love the chance to work with voices. The best thing is seeing and hearing people shine through working together. I've recently passed my qualification to become a Breathing Coordination Practitioner after two years of study in America. I'm excited to pass on all the ground-breaking info I've learned. So much comes back to the body and breathing for our voices.
Meldi: Who is your favourite composer/inspiration?
Michaele: I listen to a range of music from Baroque to pop. It’s always so great to feed the imagination from music to images and shows. Working on songs for my EP coming out soon - you never know what will be an inspiration. The mood and atmosphere of Iceland created by author Hannah Kent in her book "Burial Rites" was an indirect influence on the songs. I also loved an exhibition I saw in Los Angeles at the Getty Museum on medieval art and illuminated manuscripts. The sea and bush of our gorgeous Central Coast is always so nourishing and inspiring.
Meldi: Do you play chamber music?
Michaele: Working with all kinds of instrumentalists is great. I'm so happy to have the chance to play with guitarist Giuseppe Zangari, Gabrielle Steele on viola and cellist Sally Maer for my next gig, "Songs of the Solstice".
They are all such amazing people and musicians. I'm excited by the sound we've got going with all the mellow sounding instruments and I'm adding playing the alto harmonium as well as finding a more medieval tone with my voice. Actress Augusta Miller will be reading excerpts for "Burial Rites" so it's going to be a really fun collaboration.
