The Central Coast Instrufest Woodwind and Brass Categories are open to all student and amateur musicians aged 5 and over.

Adjudicator: Dr Alana Blackburn

A highly regarded recorder player performing as a soloist and ensemble musician throughout Australia, New Zealand and Europe; Alana has performed with a number of ensembles including The Royal Wind Music, The New Dutch Academy, Salut! Baroque, The Bell Shakespeare Company, Pinchgut Opera, The Sydney Consort, The Tall Poppeas and The Sydneian Bach Choir.

As a soloist, she has performed concerti with The Early Music Ensemble of the Sydney Conservatorium, The Manly-Warringah Symphony Orchestra, Coro Innominata and The Bourbaki Ensemble; she has also teamed up with other Australian artists Rosalind Halton (Harpsichord), Riley Lee (Shakuhachi), Neal Peres da Costa & Daniel Yeadon (continuo), Ben Carey (sound technologist), and commissioned a number of composers, exploring the use of recorders and electronics in performance. A graduate of both Sydney and Amsterdam Conservatories, she performs both early and contemporary music, and has performed in some of the world’s greatest recital and concert halls including; the Sydney Opera House, Wigmore Hall (UK), Amsterdam Concertgebouw (NL), and Konzerthaus Berlin (GR), appeared on six CDs, and performed live on radio broadcast in Australia, New Zealand, Germany and The Netherlands.

In addition to performance, Alana combines arts management with creative practice, investigating the internal and external influences on artist careers and ensembles.

Do I need an accompanist?

A Central Coast Conservatorium of Music (CCCM) accompanist will be available for performers in all categories.

If a CCCM accompanist is provided for your event, there will be no charge on the day of your performance.

If you require a CCCM accompanist, please indicate this on your registration form.

CCCM accompanists can be contacted for rehearsal prior to your event. Once your section and time slot has been confirmed, CCCM will email you with the details of your accompanist.

Meeting with an CCCM accompanist outside of the event will be at your own negotiated cost and must occur on-site at Central Coast Conservatorium.

You must confirm with your accompanist; the repertoire you will be performing and in what event you will feature that repertoire. Entrants must provide a copy of their music to the accompanist prior to their performance date.

Can I use a backing track?

Vocalists and instrumentalists can use a recorded backing track.

Please indicate on your registration form if a recorded backing track will be provided.

Backing tracks must not have any recorded vocals. Recorded backing tracks are to be uploaded to the Central Coast Instrufest Portal no later than 10 days prior to the event.

Files should be in MP3 format. Please use the following format when naming your file: Category_Entrant name_Item 1 (Title_Artist /Composer/Lyricist) ( eg :Contemporary Vocal_ Liz Star_Hurt_Christina Aguilera). All entrants should bring copies of all backing tracks on a USB, labelled as per the above, for contingency purposes.
