Musicianship

Musicianship encompasses the essential skills that develop a well-rounded musician, including music theory, aural training, sight-reading, rhythm, and harmony. These skills deepen musical understanding and enhance overall performance ability.

Our musicianship classes help students develop all aspects of musical understanding and application. With musicianship, students often accelerating practical progress on their instrument.

The music theory group classes are held on a weekly basis and have been developed by Dr Phillip Rutherford, who has a PhD in Music (Composition) from the Sydney Conservatorium.

About Musicianship Classes

Musicianship classes are music theory groups based on experience levels and cover the following topics:

  • Reading music accurately.
  • The structure of music.
  • Aural abilities i.e., ‘ear training’.
  • Sight reading skills.
  • Sight singing skills.
  • Music history.
  • Music appreciation of all styles of music, from classical to popular.

As lifelong learners, musicians continue to study and practice even after they have built solid skills, to deepen their understanding and keep their skills as sharp as possible.

HSC Musicianship Support

Are you studying Music HSC in Year 11 or 12? Central Coast Conservatorium of Music offers dedicated support classes for HSC students, led by experienced musicianship teacher Dr. Phillip Rutherford.

These sessions provide in-depth coverage of the Year 11 and 12 curriculum, helping students strengthen their understanding of music theory, analysis, and aural skills. Students also have the opportunity to collaborate with peers who are going through the same HSC journey, gaining valuable insights and support from one another.

Classes are held at CCCM’s Gosford campus on Fridays from 4:15 PM – 5:00 PM in the Robert Knox Hall lecture theatre. Join us and enhance your HSC music studies in a supportive and engaging environment!

Studying musicianship, alongside my practical one-to-one bassoon lessons and being part of ensembles including the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and then the Central Coast Youth Orchestra has also given me a holistic understanding of music and equipped me with the skills to become a better musician.
