What is a masterclass?
A piano masterclass is an open lesson given by an invited musician of notable status and skill. In this case, we are lucky to have the visiting pianist Calvin Abdiel who was the third prize winner of the 2021 Sydney International Piano Competition.
The masterclass will provide spectators with an opportunity to be inspired by the process of learning at an advanced level and they will see how playing the piano encompasses a full range of skills – from basic technique to interpretation and artistry.
Who will play in the masterclass?
In this open class, 4 or 5 preselected advanced students will present repertoire from the classical and romantic period. These students are currently preparing for upcoming examinations and recitals.
Is it only for advanced students?
No. Students of all levels and ages will benefit from watching performances given by musicians of a similar age. Aspects of their playing will be broken down and explained so that everyone can gain from the lesson.Â
Mr Abdiel will follow his masterclass with a full recital – this is an opportunity not to be missed.
What is the benefit of a masterclass?
The main point of a masterclass is to provide a new perspective and fresh approach. Mr Abdiel has travelled the world working as a concert pianist and he has also been taught by some of the world’s leading teachers. In this class,  students of all levels and ages will benefit from watching other students of a similar age perform works from the classical and romantic period.Â
Mr Abdiel will then offer insight into the background and style of each piece and will share his experience and talent in coaching students to achieve an even more polished and stylistic account of their works.
The masterclass will provide spectators an opportunity to be inspired by the process of learning at an advanced level and they will see how playing the piano encompasses a full range of skills – from basic technique to interpretation and artistry.
