Central Coast Concert Band is dedicating its next concert at Gosford Anglican Church on Saturday 5 August, to esteemed former musical director, the late Robert Bedwell OAM.
Described as a “larrikin” and a “gentleman” Robert passed away on Tuesday 18 July. In tribute to Robert, CCCB has decided to dedicate the Sound Waves concert – featuring the Central Coast Conservatorium’s Primary Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Wind Orchestra – to their much-loved former musical director.
“Robert was an incredible musician and music educator who changed the lives of thousands of students both on the Central Coast and in Sydney. His dedication to community music here on the Coast and his passion for music education left massive shoes for me to fill when I took over the Concert Band. His participation with the concert band went all the way through until late last year,” said CCCB current musical director, Patrick Brennan.
The concert will also include the popular tune, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life by Eric Idle and M.Schneider. “For those who have followed the Concert Band you will know that this is one of our theme songs. Following Robert’s passing we feel he would like to remind all of us that it is always worth looking on the bright side of life, to find an advantage and enjoy,” said CCCB spokesperson Kindi Smith.
Robert devoted his life to teaching and making music and was a prolific conductor whose career spanned over 25 years. The Central Coast Concert Band was incorporated in 1989, headed up by musical director Robert Bedwell. He was an instrumental teacher at the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music for nine years and served as Musical Director for six productions of Gosford Musical Society. He was Musical Director of the Central Coast Concert Band for 23 years.
He was also President of the Band Association of NSW from 2000 to 2005, and President of the National Band Council of Australia from 2005 – 2009, 2013-2015 and life member.
As well as CCCB, Robert was also at the helm of the Forrest High School Bands, the City of Lake Macquarie Concert Band, and the Abbotsleigh Girls School Concert Band. He also established the Forrest Wind Orchestra. He mentored countless students and left an indelible mark on their musical education.
“Robert will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his Navy stories, and most of all, his passion and dedication to banding in NSW and across Australia,” said Band Association of NSW. “Our deepest sympathies go out to Robert’s family during this difficult time. He will be sorely missed.”
