Work is underway to transform the Central Coast Conservatorium’s front gardens thanks to an army of green-thumbed community volunteers.

Over two days on 15 and 23 March the team of helpers – from a Duke of Edinburgh Award participant to community garden members and board members – joined outgoing Central Coast Conservatorium Outgoing Chair, Claire Braund OAM, for a day of weeding, garden preparation, planting and mulching.

Claire said installation of a new boundary fence with the former council building, planting the gardens and lighting the outside of the building were the final step in the make-over of the Conservatorium.

“Thank you to all of our volunteers who turned up in the heat of day one and the rain of day two to work collaboratively together on this project. Many hands do indeed make light work – and in years to come, when the gardens flourish, they will feel quiet pride in the job they have done.”

The team underplanted the palms on right-hand side of Robert Knox Hall with Doodias (a type of fern) and the other two front gardens were planted with Grevillia Bronze Rambler, a vigorous, fast-growing, low-growing ground cover with finely-cut ferny-lacy leaves. A feature tree – a standard Bronze Rambler – was placed in a custom-designed Corten steel planter at the top of the stairs.

The volunteers were: James and Zoe Laffan, Diana Maddrell (East Gosford Community Garden), Claire Braund, Graham Castle, Warren Stewart, Hilary Day, Graham Hosking, Douglas Wallace, Warren Stewart and Meredith Kirton.

The Conservatorium is always welcomes volunteers to help with gardening, building maintenance and events.

“Volunteering is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to support Central Coast Con and, we are always on the lookout for enthusiastic parents and community members to lend a hand,” said Claire.
